What do you say when...

...when people ask you to donate money for a good cause?

I always get embarrassed when people who work at the registers ask me if I want to donate money to organizations that help starving kids in the third world countries, brave soldiers who fight for their country, cancer prevention/treatment, march of dimes, etc etc.

I usually just wince in my heart and hand over $1, but this is getting old quick. I'm not saying that I'm a sucky human being (although, after the previous post, many of you might think that I'm AM one of those sucky human beings that exploit other ppl's privacy), and I'm not saying that I DON'T want to help out those people, but in today's economy, every bit counts. Besides, I don't really know where the money is going in the end. For all I know, the whole donation thing could've been a hoax.

So, to all my lovely readers: Have you ever been in one of these situations? What were your excuses? What did you do when they asked you to donate?

Thanks!
Tao

P.S. I know that celebs are real people, and that it sucks that they have no privacy, but it's a price to pay in order to make multi-million dollars. I'm not saying that Robert and Kristen are bad people, but they are not the Edward/Bella I had in mind. I know that Edward/Kristen were both involved in other great productions before Twilight, but it's like after seeing Harry Potter, you can not see Danielle Radcliffe without thinking Harry Potter. Yes, he was/will be in other productions, but he will always be known as Harry Potter.

P.P.S. For those of you wondering who HASN'T tried pot, I haven't. Never have and never will. I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I don't do drugs. I know a lot of you think that marijuanna isn't a drug, but RIGHT NOW, it is still illegal. Besides, from what I've heard, it gives you the munchies, so people who are watching their figure shouldn't try it. LOL!

I just say no I can't donate today...whatever I need money for the poor college student with no job fund!

You can say "I've already donated," like from another time, or even an earlier time on the same day (that is, if you must tell them more information).

If I have some money to spare, I will donate. If for some reason I can't, I just tell them "sorry, maybe some other time." I always feel guilty when I don't though. I also feel kind of guilty when a homeless person asks me for money. You never really know who actually needs it and who doesn't.

i tagged you on my blog by the way :)

What my mom usually says is that I already donated yesterday thanks. :)

haha, that's funny because a week ago or so (and for a while) I had to ask people that question when I was on cash. From the comments I read so far from the other ladies, they pretty much sum it all up. Oh wait.. I got this one lady....
Me: "Would you like to donate?"
Lady: "I have my own bank account I donate to and worry about"

I usually just say no. and don't think about it again. living in nyc, there are tons of bums and hobos and etc coming up to you asking you for money. kids selling candy on the train, people playing instruments badly, you learn to say no and move on, i know it sounds cold, but its like no thank you. and that's it.

does that happen to you at CVS? I've had the cashier ask me if I wanted to donate and I just gave the $3 i had in my hand because I felt kind of pressured.. but the second time the cashier asked, I just said "I already donated."
since it's a drugstore, I'm hoping its not a hoax.

Same here! I never tried Pot and I don't think that I would ever will. Grrrr @ Kristen!

- Mmm. I don't like it when people use "donation" as a way to get money. Alot of people to do that.

I only donate when it's for a good cause. If you haven't, I suggest asking them what it's for or something. You can say "I don't support that cause" or you can just say "I already had".

But I usually do, I just want good karma =/

i hate when someone says that everyone does pot, because everyone doesn't do pot, and it's really disgusting. lol I just really don't like Kristen Stewart period. I'm not even someone who knows or notices acting skills very often, but I thought her acting was horrendous in twilight (especially at the end when she's in the hospital freakking out after Edward says he's going to leave or whatever). Plus it doesn't make me like her any more knowing that the only reason she's in movies is because her dad cast her in the movies he was producing when she started "acting".

I only donate if its going to breast cancer or to cancer in general. Other than that, I dont. I kinda think its unfair for them to put you on the spot and ask you AS they're ringing you up. Its like solicitation!

I only donate when I have extra cash to spare. I don't think that's being mean or selfish, but I have needs too. Just tell them no, and don't feel crappy about it. =)

And I have never tried pot too. Same as you, never have and never will.

yea...i know how you feel. I normally give donations to pet organizations, because i love pets and they need our help to live...and breast cancer organizations, because my mom is a cancer survivor.

But the economy is very hard on everyone...especially makeup bloggers...lol

I always get asked if I want to donate money at the body shop! and since it is around $2 I always feel so guilty if I don't, but I guess I just have to learn how to say no, not today or something:(

I tell them: "Bring me your starving babies from Africa and I'll give it to them personally".

Simple as that. I don't trust people asking me. The world is filled with cons and idiots.

Esp. when I had found out about 'PetSmart' and how they abuse and torture their animals. I was pretty much donating $3 every time to have them be brutally tortured. I feel like burning the place down now. UGH.

I think there is nothing wrong with saying "no". I mean where else is our tax money going to anyways? *AHEM*

i barely encounter any donation questions at the counter but mostly on subways and in the streets. i get it a lot in the streets where they jst try to approach you and talk to you, i jst tell them i'm in a hurry and can't talk. like you said, nowadays things/ppl just can't be trusted.

Hiii, I found you from Fuzkittie's blog roll :) I find it interesting that we have similar names! My name's Thao, it's a Vietnamese name. My bf (he's Chinese) says my name also means peach in Chinese (I'm also part Chinese btw). Isn't that cool :) Anyway, they're both pronounced the same way. Well, that's all, I just want to say hi, I've just subscribed to your blog. Looking forward to more makeup tutorials :)

I hate getting hit up for donations, whether they be at the cash registers or on the street. I live in Chicago where there are a lot of peddlers and scammers (just like in most metropolitan cities.)

Anyways, I pay a ton in taxes and the way I see it... I give my contributions every two weeks.

just say I did it earlier...that way you aren't lying. earlier can mean months ago as well as earlier that day. >< I don't like donating money unless I know where it is going to go and I want it to go there.

I just assume it's just part of the cashier's job to ask for donations, so (s)he probably doesn't really care whether or not I donate.

And I totally agree with you on pot. People assume it's not such a dangerous drug because it's legalized in Amsterdam and used for therapeutic medicine, but honestly, it permanently changes the way your neurons fire. For example, the dopamine neurons that are responsible for "feel good" reward are taxed so that you'd need more and more stimulation to achieve a high. Because of this tolerance, it's called a gateway drug- so I'd be that much more inclined to experiment and get hooked on something harder such as meth or crack. Luckily, I don't know what that high is, so I'm happy with just retail therapy =P

Ah, don't feel guilty. A simple "no thank you" is suffice.

Donating should be something coming from the giver (the heart). And when CSV salespeople asks and put people on the spot, it isn't quite fair. You may not have an extra money to spare. Or not want to donate.

I usually say no.. but sometimes I say yes if its just a dollar or less.. but I always feel guilty too!

I donated to Greenpeace for a year at $15 a month. I too, am a poor starving college student with the inability to say no. Eventually I manned up and canceled my donations. I donate when I can- I just think, well if I eat in, I can use that money for that.

You don't always have to donate money to help- I also donate money and blood (and when you donate those, you get tax cuts and free meals) hehe.

I LOVE POT! Hahah :| It's illegal because its such a big industry but the government can't really regulate it and therefore cannot tax/make money off it :|
I always get munchies but then I eat so much so fast I puke!
